Industrial Stuctures

November 23, 2021

The sheer complexity of industrial processes and structures sometimes makes me just stand and wonder.

I suppose the intricate nature of machinery and structures to produces the stuff that allows the world to function in the way that economics and politics have developed should be no great surprise . They are the lynch pin to how our societies and social systems operate. Now at the start of possibly another industrial revolution , a Green Revolution , when you see the processes and mechanisms that exist at present to produce power and materials to forge steel and concrete and transport and flight and everything else that requires energy – you can see what a huge challenge changing the paradigm is for energy technology.

I took an opportunity to document a working oil refinery earlier this year in the UK . The myriad spaghetti of pipework snaking around the refinery carrying the various distillations and fractions was fascinating in its complexity. It reminded me of seeing sections of steam locomotives at York National Rail Museum with hydraulics and pressurised steam fed through small pipes that operate valves and switches around the engine. Brilliant and evocative but now all but redudant in practical use. Technologies move on and develop , hopefully for the better with opportunities and new pathways for employment and society.

New commercial opportunities arising in the era of online shopping and commerce. The old industrial coal mining sites are being used again to provide goods and employment to people in Yorkshire and across the North of England.

I took images of this site near Doncaster when it produced coal and then again a decade ago when the site was cleared for a new Eco Town . Now in the era of online commerce new automated facilities are rising out of the old heavy industry of the North.

SiG Annual Report Shoot 2020

The New Year got off to a flying start with a shoot for Jones and Palmer Design in Birmingham for the multinational SiG a leading supplier of construction materials throughout Europe.  A very quick turnaround required for deadline . Ferry to Dieppe and a long drive to Nantes for the first shoot followed by a drive back to Dieppe late that night for the early morning ferry back to Uk and straight onto the two depots at Heathrow . Next day Manchester…Customer was happy and within budget and deadline ..

Cool commission for the Ramblers Walk Magazine to illustrate another Big Walk feature with Mark Rowe around and about Scapa Flow in Orkney. Worked on a few stories with Mark for Walk and have always enjoyed both the company and the photography – this was no exception. Here are a few pix :

Nice commission over the summer for Greenpeace and Unearthed spending a couple of days illustrating a story about the Nature Reserves on the North Norfolk Coast and The Wash . The wide horizons and big skies give you an enormous sense of space and freedom. I had never previously managed to get to the Wash and even during the shoot a view of the sea in The Wash proved elusive only venturing to the coastline during one of the infrequent but regular spring tides. Fascinating place..

Very happy to have been shortlisted on the EEF Manufacturing Photography Awards for 2017 with no less than 7 images I have shot for clients over the last year including , TATA Steel , EDM Manchester , Langley Alloys , DSE Electronics and Liberty Steels. Here they are below and results announced in December – http://www.eef.org.uk/campaigning/awards-and-competitions/photo

Walking the Hebridean Way

February 15, 2016

One of the regular commission requests  that arrive in my inbox every few months is for The Ramblers Magazine ‘WALK’ . Having worked on the magazine for the past 8 years I have completed about 30 separate shoots around the UK for the ‘Walk in Depth ‘ feature but one of my all time faves was the Hebridean Way shoot on Harris and Lewis in the Western Isles with my regular associate writer  Mark Rowe last year. We had the full gamut of weather thrown at us during our 4 day stay rain, hail, sun and winds but the scenery and the walking were  magnificent . The pictures weren’t bad either – heres a selection

A really nice opportunity to try my new Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro on some brilliant technology products at Ceres Power in Horsham the other week. They have developed a very efficient and stable fuel cell that generates electrical power from Natural Gas and Air in a domestic sized unit in a very efficient way.

I remember from my early days with the environmental group Greenpeace that one of the watchwords we continually used was ‘ Best available technology’. This both applied to persuading polluters to use ‘ best available technology’ in industrial processies in order to minimize environmental discharge and pollution but also to us on the media side of Greenpeace – it was encumbent upon us to use the best available methods of media capture and dissemination. That still applies today. Being a child of the 60′ and 70’s I well remember Harold Wilsons oft repeated exhortation of ‘ the white heat of technology ‘ – Technology can be used for much good . I see the Fuel Cell as a step in that direction.

I digress – the process of construction was fascinating ( and largely secret ). The Canon Macro worked great and really helped in being able to shoot some nice abstract shots of the steel cell under construction.

Hope you enjoy the slide show….

Sabre Safety in Scotland

September 23, 2014

Had the call to travel up to Aberdeen and Cupar for a Industrial Photography shoot at the premises of Sabre Safety providers of safety equipment for the Marine Industry.

Aberdeen must have worse traffic jams than London – the only saving grace about being stuck in traffic for an hour whilst making my way across town was seeing how many high end Porsche , BMW and Aston Martins I could spot – there is a lot of money in Aberdeen !

Make it Rail !

Shoot at Tata Steel Scunthorpe in August – Nice set of Industrial Images from my latest shoot for TATA. Industrial photography presents many challenges especially when the budgets can’t include assistants. Scunthorpe TATA site covers 10 square miles ! The construction and storage sheds are huge and require a lot of lugging heavy kit around unyielding obstacles – air quality is generally not brilliant and the ambient lighting is usually a nightmare – sodium lights – don’t you just love em.

Using a Elinchrom Quadra Ranger kit for lighting subjects and elements of detail with a couple of hired in high end prime lenses the Canon 24 f.1.4 and the 35mm f1.4 with a couple of Canon 5D mkIII bodies along with a wider range of zooms – it all takes a lot of lugging.

Here are some of the results – check out the gallery on my
